Lucerne is the economic, social and cultural centre of central Switzerland. The city is located 436 m above sea level and has a population of 75'500. Temperatures average 25 °C in summer and -3 °C in winter. Noteworthy attractions include the Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument.

Nestled at the foot of the majestic Swiss Alps and on the shores of crystal blue Lake Lucerne, entwined by an equally blue ribbon of the river Reuss, this beautifully idyllic place, full of intricately decorated houses with centuries-old ornaments, towers and spires, which are proudly rising in the blue skies similarly to neighbouring mounts Pilatus and Rigi, without a doubt justifies the claim of being the most beautiful city in Switzerland. Each year millions upon millions of tourists flock to Lucerne, lured by its airy beauty and irresistible charm.
From taking a head spinning ride on the world’s steepest cogwheel railroad to leisurely admiring snow-white swans, swimming in the blue lake of Lucerne, while strolling over a world-famous ancient wooden bridge, to simply taking in the genuine beauty of nature that is vividly displayed there, you will find time spent in Lucerne an absolutely unforgettable experience
Lucerne holds the title of the most populous town in Central Switzerland. The population directly within the city equals to about 81,295 people (according to the population census of 2015), but rises up to 250,000 people (as of 2007), if you include 17 municipalities and towns, which though divided among three different neighboring cantons, still belong to Lucerne’s urban area.
Therefore, aside from being a touristic mecca, Lucerne is an economic, transportation, culture and media hub of this region.
Similar to many other Swiss cities, like Zurich for example, the official language, used in print and institutions, greatly differs from the spoken one. In case of Lucerne, which belongs to the German speaking part of Switzerland, the Swiss variety of Standard German is the official language, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect.

Thanks to a convenient location in the Central
Switzerland, Lucerne can be easily reached in no time at all from nearly every other city in Switzerland using the Swiss Federal Railway. There are hourly trains from Bern, Interlaken, Olten and Zurich Airport and half-hourly trains from Zurich.

As for traveling around Lucerne, you don’t have to worry about passes and tickets at all. All the sights are very compactly located and are easily accessed on foot. You don’t even need a guide – the frescos and ancient paintings as well as decorations on the buildings, bridges and fountains tell their story no worse than any guide would.
Accommodation or where to stay, eat and rest
For its size, there are quite a few places to stay in Lucerne, in all price ranges. However it’s better to book a room in advance, due to the huge numbers of tourists during all seasons.
A hotel in a medieval castle “Chateau Gutsch” is one of the most famous boutique hotels in Switzerland.

If you want to grab a quick bite on your way, leisurely sip a cup of coffee with chocolates or bakery enjoying a beautiful view on the lake, surrounding mountains or the city itself (Mill’Feuille, Hug, Heini andBachmann), or even taste extravagant dishes from Swiss or French cuisine (Restaurant Bodu and Restaurant Old Swiss House), there are lots of places to satisfy all your needs and desires starting from budget to the most exquisite restaurants.
The Chapel Bridge

The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), probably the most recognizable landmark of Lucerne, is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe. Originally built in the 14th century (in 1333)as a protection for the city, a 204 m (669 ft) long bridge, is decorated with a series of paintings from the 17th century depicting events from Lucerne’s history on the inside. Walking over it, you can plunge into the long and rich history and city life of Lucerne depicted on more than 120 numerated and dated triangle panels. The works of Lucerne’s patron saints St. Leodegar and St. Mauritus are among them as well.

Interesting facts:
The octagonal 43-meter-high Water Tower (Wasserturm), that adjoins the bridge, is a fortification from the 13thcentury in original condition. At different times it served as a lighthouse, a treasuryand an oubliette.Unfortunately the bridge almost completely burned down on 18th August 1993. Within a few months it was fully rebuilt.

Set aside some time to admire the beauty of this lake. Strolling on the promenades or taking a boat trip will undoubtedly bring you lots of pleasant impressions and memories.

Crystal clear blue waters reflecting the sky and the mountains it is surrounded by, scenic hills and valleys with little houses and small towns on its shore make everyone feel as if in a fairy-tail.
The Schifffahrt Vierwaldstättersee (another name for Lake Lucerne) waterway is one of the busiest waterways in Switzerland. It’s no surprise, because there’s no better way to admire Swiss exquisitely beautiful sceneries than traveling by boat in direct proximity to the nature. That’s why the Vierwaldstättersee boat service is extremely popular and can be considered the most romantic way to see the Lucerne.
