Motovun (Montona in Italian)

~is a captivating little walled town perched on a 277m hill in the Mirna River valley. The setting is astonishingly gorgeous and a large part of its appeal is in the lost-in-time views over the verdant valley, with the town rising above it like something from a fairy tale. The damp, dark Motovun Forest at its base also has a mythical quality, especially as it contains hidden treasure in the form of Istria's famous truffles.

If you are looking for a holiday destination with a difference this year that combines stunning verdurous scenery, traditional culture and fabulous cuisine; heading to the hilltop town of Motovun is likely to be a great choice.

Motovun is situated high on the top of a hill above the River Mirna in the popular region of Istria, Croatia.

Motovun is located 227 metres above sea level and boasts a sweeping view of fields of vineyards, which produce mouth-watering Malvasia and Teran wine.

Croatia is well-known for producing high-quality olive oil but it is Motovun which is home to two oil producers that are widely considered the best olive oil makers in the country.

You can go and visit these two olive oil mills and enjoy an afternoon of olive oil tasting!

Every October and November, Motovun opens its door to the White Truffle Fair. Admission is free for all, as swathes of locals and visitors descend on Motovun and its neighbouring villages for some serious truffle celebrations.
